James Austin Lewcock

James was born in Islington on 27 September 1866 at 16 Norfolk Road.

His father was a printer and compositor, but he became a clerk/accountant.

The electoral register 1890-1894 has him at 73 Oxford Road, Islington. He is listed as renting one unfurnished bedroom at a rent of over £12 per annum. His landlord is George Albert Lewcock (his father), of the same address.

James married Amy Elizabeth Reed in 1896 at St Bartholomew, Gray’s Inn Road. The witnesses were Elizabeth Huggett, Lucy Lewcock, mother of the groom, and Frances George Saunders. He was resident in Tollington Park, and she was living at Cubitt Street, Gray’s Inn Road. He gave his profession as an accountant.

They had two children, Francis James (Frank) in 1897 and Edna Constance in 1901.

1901 He is listed as a “Book keeper foreign trade” and living at 34 Grand Parade, Tottenham.

James was living at 5, Chesterfield Gardens in Tottenham when he was initiated into the Freemasons as a member of the newly formed Horistic Lodge on 8th December 1903.

1911: The family were living at 48 Stanhope Gardens, Haringey. James was a Municipal Accountant.

Amy and Francis (Frank) both served in the war. She was a cook, and he served in the army.

Nurse and Soldier

By this time they were living at 4 Calthorpe Street, St. Pancras.

1921. James was a “Secretary” [Company Secretary] at S. Dixon & Sons Ltd., brass founders, Swinegate, Leeds.

He was listed alone at King Street Chambers, King Street in Leeds, but there is no sign anywhere (yet) of Amy or Francis and Alice, who were not long married and had recently had their first child.

Daughter Edna was a visitor with Dr Leonard and his wife Edith and their son Brian in Prescot, Lancashire. She married Brian the following year.

1935. Amy died on 17 May 1935. They were living at 563 Scott Hall Road. Leeds. She was buried on 21st May 1935 at St Matthew, Chapel Allerton.

1939. James was still living at 563 Scott Hall Road, working as an “Incorporated accountant and company secretary”.

Died James died in March 1946, and he was buried on the 1st April 1946, also at St Matthew, Chapel Allerton. His estate was probated on 1st November of the same year. Probate went to Francis James Lewcock, journalist and Edna Constance Youatt wife of Bryan Dinsdale Youatt. Effects: £2942 10s 7d.
